Description

Senegal is a country in western Africa bordered by the Atlantic Ocean to the west, Mauritania to the north, Mali to the east and Guinea and Guinea-Bissau to the south. The landscape of Senegal is mainly rolling sandy plains. The Senegal River, at 1790 km long, forms the border between Senegal and Mauritania. Cap-Vert, the westernmost point of continental Africa, is the home f the capital Dakar. The climate is tropical which results in dry and humid seasons. Inland, the temperatures are even higher and the amount of rainfall increases farther south.

Senegal is a republic with a powerful presidency, with the president being elected every five years by universal adult suffrage. Senegal has over 80 political parties. The unicameral National Assembly is elected separately from the president and is made up of 120 members. The judiciary is independent in Senegal. The constitutional council and court of justice are the nation's highest courts that deal with business issues and are named by the president. Local administrators are also appointed by the president and are responsible for reporting to him as well.

The official language in Senegal is French; however, the Wolof is a recognized language whereas 43% of the population are of Wolof ethnicity. There is a wide variety of ethnic groups present which result in many other languages being very widely spoken. The predominant religion is Islam and practiced by over 95 percent of the population.
