Funding for Study Abroad

Explore the following sites for study abroad grants, scholarships, and financial aid. Start this process early so you can be sure to meet the deadlines.

Contact the Office of Financial Aid to discuss your federal, state and institutional financial aid including, grants, loans, and scholarships. You may use your federal financial aid for study abroad, and, depending upon your situation, you may also be able to use some state aid as well as other scholarships. Even if you do not presently have financial aid (scholarships, loans, grants), you may still be able to apply for it if the costs of study abroad exceed those of Shepherd University. Prepare a budget (Can we link our budget worksheet to this wording through a hot link?) with all your study abroad expenses: program costs, housing, airfare, passport, living expenses, etc and bring this with you to Financial Aid.

Click here for a Study Abroad Budget Worksheet to explore comparisons of program costs and funding options.

Post 9/11 GI Bill Fact Sheet
The student must be enrolled in courses that will apply to the student’s program, In this case, the VA can pay the cost of the home school’s tuition up to the in-state maximum, and can pay a monthly stipend for room and board, as long as the student is enrolled for more than half-time, as well as a stipend for books and supplies.   The VA can only cover the cost of any fees specific to study abroad (such as study abroad administrative fees, airfare, etc.) if the study abroad is mandatory for the student’s program.  Benefits are only payable up to the benefit payment tier for which the student is eligible.  “Example: If the student’s benefit payment tier is 40%, VA would pay 40% of the housing allowance, 40% of charged tuition and 40% of the books stipend.”   For more information visit VA website.

SIT Study Abroad Pell Match Scholarship Program

The Federal Pell Grant Program provides need-based grants to low-income undergraduate students to promote access to postsecondary education.   Beginning with fall 2010 programs, SIT will automatically match a student's Pell award used for a semester program with SIT, thereby placing high-quality, field-based study abroad programs within greater financial reach of a wider range of undergraduate students.  More than 30 SIT programs across the globe are eligible for the new Pell match scholarship.

Diversity Abroad, in partnership with GlobalLinks Learning Abroad and The Foundation for Asia Pacific Education will offer $1000 scholarships for undergraduate students to study abroad in the Asia/Pacific region during the summer, fall and spring terms.  The scholarship is open regardless of which institution or provider a student uses to pursue education abroad in the region.  This scholarship specifically targets students who identify as one of the following: ethnic minority, economically disadvantaged, having a physical disability, or first generation college student.

Bridging Scholarship Program

The Bridging Scholarship program will award 60 scholarships to American students participating in study-abroad programs in Japan.  Undergraduate students majoring in any field of study and attending any recognized exchange or independent program in Japan are eligible to apply for these scholarships.  Recipients of Bridging Scholarships will receive stipends ranging from $2,500 to $4,000, depending on the length of their study program in Japan. The scholarships are funded by donations from U.S. corporations and foundations to the US-Japan Bridging Foundation, and administered by the Association of Teachers of Japanese.  Beginning this year, applications for Bridging Scholarships will be accepted only once a year, so students planning to study abroad in Japan during any part of the academic year (Fall semester, Spring semester, or the full academic year) should apply this spring. There will be no separate scholarships offered for Spring study programs.

The Global Studies Grant for Student Travel and Study Abroad

Designed to support foreign language training and other academic studies abroad, this grant provides supplemental funds for American students who already are studying abroad under the auspices of an official study abroad program conducted by an accredited academic institution. GSF seeks to support a formative experience abroad for the recipient, who also must share this experience with others upon his or her return. GSF is particularly interested in funding the study of strategically significant countries and languages. Among the most significant selection criteria are academic performance (as indicated in courses, grades, recommendations, and other achievements), program merit, and outreach potential.  Grant recipients will be expected to acknowledge GSF's support, to report on their experiences, and to work with GSF to share those experiences as widely as possible.

Alliance for Global Education IFSA Foundation & Critical Languages Scholarship (CLS) Programs

Alliance Scholarships - Through a partnership between the Alliance and the IFSA Foundation two scholarships of $6,000 and 20 scholarships of $2,500 are available each academic year. These will be need-based; students from non-traditional majors or minority backgrounds are encouraged to apply.  The maximum amount that students can receive is $6,000 per student for the fall and spring terms and $1,500 per student for the summer term.  There are also additional study abroad scholarship funds available for disbursement in smaller amounts.  Students who have been accepted into an Alliance program are eligible to apply for study abroad scholarship awards of up to $2,000 per student for the fall and spring terms and up to $1,000 per student for the summer term. These awards are based on financial need and cannot be combined with the scholarship funding from the IFSA Foundation.

The U.S. Department of State's Critical Languages Scholarship (CLS) program is part of an effort to expand the number of Americans studying and mastering critical need foreign languages. The Alliance for Global Education is pleased to announce that we have has been chosen to administer two of the sites in China. Students who are awarded the full scholarship will study intensive Chinese in Summer 2010 in Beijing (Beijing Language and Culture University) or Shanghai (Fudan University).  Classes will be offered at the intermediate or advanced level.  During the 8-week program, students will enroll in 20 hours per week of Chinese language, live with Chinese roommates (Shanghai) or host families (Beijing), have a peer language tutor, and participate in organized activities and excursions. All program fees, round-trip air travel, meals, activities and excursions will be covered by the scholarship.  Eighty full scholarships are available for China, and the Alliance will host at least half of the scholars. Students of diverse disciplines and majors are encouraged to apply.
